It’s one of the most common fitness questions; in fact, it ranks sixth on the list of the most Googled fitness-related queries. So if you’re wondering How Often Should You Work Out? to reach your goals, you’re definitely not alone.

At Real Fitness, most of our members come to us for strength training, so that’s what we’ll focus on here.

New to Strength Training or thinking about how often should you work out?

Good news: you don’t need to spend hours in the gym to get results. If you’re just getting started with full-body strength workouts, training 1–2 times per week is enough to begin seeing noticeable improvements in strength and energy levels.

This early phase is often referred to as “newbie gains.” Your body responds quickly to resistance training when it’s something new.

Once you’re more consistent, increasing to 3 strength training sessions per week can help boost your progress, especially if you’re looking to build lean muscle or get stronger faster.

But don’t worry if your schedule only allows for 2 gym workouts per week. Plenty of our members see amazing results training just twice a week, as long as the workouts are well-structured and focused.

Training for Specific Strength or Muscle Goals?

If your goals include:

• Building lean muscle mass

• Performing your first bodyweight chin-up

Deadlifting your bodyweight (or more)

…then training more frequently, usually 3 or more strength workouts per week, may be ideal.

Adding more gym sessions allows you to target muscle groups more specifically and improve your form, technique, and overall performance.

What If You Want Total Fitness?

If your goals are more about overall fitness, cardiovascular health, or improving athletic performance, we recommend:

2 days of full-body strength training

• Plus 1–2 days of cardio, sport, or conditioning workouts

This balance helps improve strength, endurance, and athleticism without overtraining.

A Simple Breakdown:

General fitness or beginner?

→ 2 strength sessions per week

Specific strength/muscle goals?

→ 3+ strength sessions per week

Want total fitness (strength + cardio)?

→ 2 strength + 2 cardio/sport sessions per week

Consistency, recovery, and training quality matter just as much as how many days you’re in the gym.
